Chris Jones

Project Director

Chris Jones, FSA, FRHistS, is an Associate Professor in Medieval History at the University of Canterbury, Aotearoa New Zealand. His edited books include John of Paris: Beyond Royal and Papal Power (Brepols, 2015), Magna Carta and New Zealand: History, Law and Politics in Aotearoa, with Stephen Winter (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017), and Rethinking Medieval and Renaissance Political Thought, with Takashi Shogimen (Routledge, 2023). He is the Co-Director of the Canterbury Roll Project, and is particularly interested in medieval and early modern legacies in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Kaspar Middendorf

UC Arts Digital Lab Manager

Kaspar Middendorf has skills in website development and various programming languages, and qualifications in secondary teaching. Kaspar completed their MLING thesis in 2017, using statistical modelling to compare syntactic structures in the QuakeBox spoken language corpus with the written language of the Christchurch Press. Kaspar has provided technical support and guidance to the research assistants working with the ADL on this project, and has been involved throughout the project’s many stages.

Annika Stedman

Research Assistant

Annika took part in a Summer Research Scholarship in 202223 to design and build the Wicked Bible Digital edition using the Omeka S platform. She also conducted research into the function and purpose of the English court of High Commission in the 17th century. Annika has an interest in ecclesiastical history, and completed an Independent Course of Study with a focus on St Augustine of Hippo.

Quillan Taylor

Research Assistant

Quillan took part in a Summer Research Scholarship in 202223 tasked with building an online platform to host the digitised Donnithorne-Christchurch Wicked Bible. He also researched 17th-century English printing techniques. Quillan has a Bachelor of Arts, double-majoring in history and anthropology. As an undergraduate, he undertook an Independent Course of Study in palaeography and rare book studies.

Sarah Askey

Book and Paper Conservator

Sarah Askey is a book and paper conservator with a PGDip Conservation of Books and Library Materials from West Dean College in the United Kingdom. After several years at the Alexander Turnbull Library and National Library of New Zealand, where she worked on notable projects such as the conservation of Katherine Mansfield’s notebooks and the Books in Māori Ngā Tānga Reo Māori Digitisation Project, Sarah now works in private practice. She is a member of the New Zealand Conservators of Cultural Materials Pū Manaaki Kahurangi.

The Donnithorne-Christchurch Wicked Bible is owned by The Phil and Louise Donnithorne Family Trust. The bible is on long-term loan to the Macmillan Brown Library, University of Canterbury.

Conservation work on the bible was completed by independent book and paper conservator Sarah Askey in 2021. This work was funded by The Phil and Louise Donnithorne Family Trust and the UC Foundation.

The Wicked Bible Project website was created using Omeka S by Annika Stedman and Quillan Taylor as part of a Summer Scholarship programme undertaken in the UC Arts Digital Lab in 202223. Thanks are also extended to Donna Barber from the University of Canterbury Library for her guidance and support, and to Damian Cairns, librarian with responsibility for Rare Books and Special Collections. The Summer Scholarships were supervised by Dr Chris Jones (UC History) and generously supported by a donation from Maxwell Logistics.
