The formation and development of Trades Unionism in Canterbury is a centennial lecture delivered by unionist James Thorn in 1950. Thorn was one of the founders of the trade union movement in Christchurch and the country's first M.P. from a labour party, elected to represent Christchurch South in 1904 as a member of the Political Labour League of New Zealand.
