Christchurch Socialist Sunday School Song Book

Printed by the Maoriland Worker Company Ltd. in 1919, the Christchurch Socialist Sunday School Song Book is a booklet of secular hymns. Song titles include Democracy, The People to their Land, True Freedom and The Workers of the World United. A small booklet of the Socialist ten commandments is sewn to the inside front cover.

As a secular alternative to religious schools, the first Socialist Sunday School opened in Christchurch in 1917.  The schools began in Scotland in the early 20th century as a way of teaching socialist ideals to young people.
