Christchurch, the garden city of New Zealand

Compiled in 1968 for the Christchurch Beautifying Association (Inc.) Christchurch, the garden city of New Zealand emphasises the sentiment of Christchurch's 'English tradition'.

The vibrant images showcase the Association's objectives to "foster in the community a sense of civic consciousness, to guard against disfigurement of beauty spots and to resist any encroachment on public reserves".

The poem published in the introduction of this work speaks of the residents of Christchurch endeavouring to maintain the sentiments of the early 'Pilgrims.' One could argue that the images shown in the publication are very much 'English scenes' as well as spirit.

" 'Tis not thy soil, O England, nor thy scenes, 'Tis England where an English spirit dwells."
