Sadie Balkind

Sadie Balkind (1912-1985) graduated with a MA Honours degree from Canterbury and moved into a career of teaching which included periods at Waitaki and Christchurch Girls High. She was a favourite among the students and was noted for her enthusiastic Shakespeare lessons. At the time of her retirement she was the senior inspector of secondary schools in Christchurch which she noted as being odd to inspect someone who had taught her in the past. Sadie was well known for her work in education, conservation and the arts, and was a member of many organisation including the Friends of the Theatre Royal, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Forest and Bird Society, as well as having an interest in librarianship.
She travelled extensively and spent a period of time in the United Kingdom between her postings at Waitaki and Christchurch Girls, the letter on display is from a friend she met at a Kipling lecture in England during this period.
