Pat Lawlor

Writer, journalist and bibliophile, Pat Lawlor (1893-1979) was a central figure in the bookplate and Ex Libris movement in New Zealand. Although he spent many years working in Australia he remained a proud Wellingtonian and was a central figure within the New Zealand literary scene.

Lawlor had seven bookplates designed for him, three of which were used for separate parts of his book collection. During what are known as his ‘Aussie years’ he adopted the pen name, “Shibli Bagarag’ which is portrayed in one of his bookplates designed by Gordon Minhinnick. Lawlor’s other bookplates were designed by Russell Clark, Ronald Holloway, Dunedin artist Gordon McAuslan, cartoonist Tom Glover, Australian etcher David Little and Alan Paterson.
