"University of Canterbury Library. This is one of nearly three hundred volumes dealing with the lives of eminent scientists, with special emphasis on Charles Darwin and his associates, which were presented on his retirement by Robert Sutcliffe Allan PH.D, D.SC., F.G.S., F.R.S.N.Z. From 1931 to 1965, Dr Allan, Lecturer-in-Charge and then Professor of Geology, was a good friend to this Library. He served for many years as a member of the Selection Committee and of the Library Committee, he was, during thirty-five years on the Professional Board and several years on the Council, a constant advocate of Library improvements, and he was a frequent donor of material useful to the Library"
